Quail Hunting
Quail hunting with Crazy Feather Outfitters (CFO) is a unique and fascinating experience developed over many seasons by Gerry Glasco and his guides. CFO quail guides are widely respected as the foremost quail guides and dog handlers in Mexico not only by the CFO clients, but by even the camps in Mexico and their quail guides themselves.
CFO’S staff of dog handlers and quail scouts that have over 30 years of combined experience. All were trained to hunt using a combination of walking and riding on the quail rigs that maximizes the amount of coveys and quail a hunter can see during a three day hunt. Gerry Glasco personally trained each of the guides and dog handlers and their development has been remarkable over the last decade and a half.
The Northeastern Mexican state of Tamauliupas is renowned in bird hunting circles as the greatest bobwhite territory on Earth. It provides a broad variety of habitat in a very small area. Cover varies from flat, fertile coastal land to very hilly rocky soil just a few miles to the west, as well as grain fields to cattle pastures to mesquite covered hills. This allows CFO to put you in prime quail hunting areas every year. The warm climate of Tamauliupas allows the bobwhite to thrive and reproduce in a magnitude that is unsurpassed in any other area of North America. This unique climate and terrain combines to create the hunt of which you’ve always dreamed.
Each winter Gerry relocates his Crazy Feather Kennels from southern Illinois to Tamauliupas, Mexico. There, in the greatest bobwhite quail habitat on Earth, a string of over 50 of the finest bird dogs combine with the primitive Mexican farming areas to take you on the hunt of a lifetime. CFO Kennels uses wide-ranging pointers to locate the coveys and close-working Brittany’s in the location of single and dead birds.
CFO will entertain you in the specifically designed trucks that they build to efficiently and safely transport you to and from the field. The trucks are fitted with seats on top of the rigs for your comfort during the hunt. Water and coolers make your hard (and long) day of hunting a pleasure for you as well as the dogs. The rigs are new or late model 4×4, 4 door trucks, each equipped with private UHF radios. When you hunt with CFO, you no longer have to worry about the poorly maintained equipment often associated with Mexican outfitters.
Although, quail hunting in Mexico is cyclical and varies from year to year, the hunting varies from good on the worst years to unbelievable and incomparable on the great years. Cycles normally run in intervals of 5 to 6 years, and the peak of the cycle will normally last for two seasons. During the peak of the population cycle days of 40 plus coveys are commonplace during a day of hunting.
